After travelling the world working in cane fields, mines, and on the road with the likes of Dylan and Bowie, Mark Rogers had learnt a few things about life. When he picked up a camera, he found himself a home. He assisted Annie Leibowitz on location in Barcelona and with his great love of people and stories now shoots assignments around the world.
Known for his innate ability to distill the essence of a story or character into a singular image, he has worked on sixty feature films and forty television dramas and documentaries. His clients include Paramount Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Sony Pictures, Millenium Pictures, Village Roadshow, Lionsgate, US Discovery, BBC Worldwide, Foxtel, National Geographic Channel, ABC, SBS, Showtime, See-Saw Films, Network Ten and Channel Nine.
Rogers' instinctive story-telling skills and engaging people photography also distinguish his advertising work. Commissioned by major companies around the world, his advertising clients include Panasonic, Toyota, Palmolive, Cadbury, Telstra, Jetstar, Sony Music USA, Cochlear, Paramount, David Jones, Save the Children and Mission Australia.
Alongside his film and television work, Rogers is regularly sought after for his portraiture. Defined by an ease and directness, his images balance intimacy with presence and feeling. He is able to elicit both disarming warmth and wry collusion from his subjects.
Rogers has photographed some of the world’s top actors, politicians, athletes, musicians and celebrities. These include Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Rupert Murdoch, Nicole Kidman, Dennis Hopper, Henry Rollins and Hugh Jackman. His editorial work has appeared in an array of local and international publications including Rolling Stone, Vogue, The London Times Magazine, Good Weekend, Inside Sport UK, Spanish Vogue and GQ Germany.
While his commercial photography involves the big screen and famous faces, Rogers’ personal photography explores more ordinary folk and community. The sensitivity which marks his work has made him a regular finalist in The National Portrait Prize, Head On, The Moran Photographic Prize, the Albury Art Prize and The Olive Cotton Award. His pictures have been exhibited at the National Gallery of Australia, The Art Gallery of NSW and The Australian Centre for Photography as well as exhibitions in Barcelona, Hamburg, Kuala Lumpur, Auckland and Singapore.
Mark Rogers has also taught photography at the Australian Centre for Photography and to indigenous teenagers in remote communities in Arnhem Land through the Northern Territory Open Education Centre. He has tutored at the Macleay College of Advertising and conducted Masterclasses at the Australian Film and Television and Radio School.
He lives in Sydney with his wife, film-maker Jen Peedom and their children, Tashi and Luca.
